My $0.02 is that I always hike in trail shoes if it's under 10 miles and I don't have a heavy pack. I save the boots for those types of situations, or for especially cold or wet hikes where I really need to protect my feet. I have a pair of Merrell Moab, fwiw, but "EDC hiking" (and running) is Altra Lone Peak shoes.
