I would not recommend this switch, even for $10.

I have owned 6 of these over the years and they all die the same way. They work fine for a few months or even a few years then one day they start overheating and dropping tons of packets on all interfaces with no changes to the device or environment, in a climate-controlled room that never goes above 72 degrees F.

I replaced 3 of them just within the dates of April 17, 2021 and February 15, 2022

I also had similar issues with a TP-Link TL-SG108 8 Port.

I have since swapped out my switches for these two brands/models and have had no issues since.

Incorrect. TL-SG105E is an unmanaged switch. Says so in the description.
Also, here is the relevant Amazon link: https://a.co/d/iSulaya

This is a managed switch and a great buy. I have the 8 port version and I have no issues with it.

I might have to pick one of these up even though I don't really need it.

Not usually a fan of 5 port switches as they fill up fast, but pretty hard to go wrong at $10. Note this has VLAN capabilities versus an unmanaged switch. FYI I bought a switch recently from Woot, and it had clearly been returned and poorly re-shrink-wrapped. I complained and they refunded me without requiring a return - I'm not advocating that people do that unless they receive a returned item, but FYI.

Thanks for confirming that. The woot description said it was manageable/an upgrade from unmanaged, but the actual model (TL-SG105E) is unmanaged on Amazon yeah. Darn lol

This is a Gigabit switch. It will not do 2.5 or 10 Gbps, just 1 Gbps.

Cat5 and Cat6 are cable standards and Cat5E can do 10Gb up to 50M, and Cat6 up to 100M (in theory). Unless you have network equipment in your household that can do 2.5Gbps or above, this is the next appropriate switch for a standard household network.

I have this switch and depending on your needs, it could be considered semi-managed perhaps. The amazon description states
  • 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Manage and configure your network effortlessly via a web interface/free software.
I have a tp-link omada network at home and can confirm this switch cannot be managed using the omada controller. This switch does have a web interface where you can configure the ports, loop, bandwidth, LAG, VLAN, some QoS, etc... However it does work like an unmanaged switch out of the box.

Even though it can't be managed in a central system such as the omada controller, it can be configured beyond what most would consider a "dumb switch"

I wish there was an inexpensive TP-Link easy managed switch with 2.5G ports.

Not TP-Link but Ubiquiti has the Switch Flex Mini 2.5G that's managed and relatively cheap (surprisingly $50).

2020 here, SG105, still working fine in a warm network closet. But yeah from what I have seen the defect rate of TP-Link is not great, have since been using Netgear
