If you have a fairly recent router that has a USB 3.0 port, you might be able to get away with just plugging the drive into that and configuring it to be shared over the network.

I had wondered the same thing, and now I have two 4 bay NAS enclosures plus 1 4 bay expansion with 2 8tb raid 1s, a 14tb raid 1, a 20tb raid 1 and a raid 10 w/ four 4tb drives. it is a slippery slope lol

It's hard to tell what's inside one these 20+ TB Seagate externals. The very early ones may have had Seagate Exos or Ironwolf in them, and those are great for shucking, but lately people have been finding Barracuda drives in them and the most I'll say is the jury is undecided on how reliable they might be. They typically are rated for far fewer work hours (mtbf) but since they're pretty new, who really knows. Personally, I avoid them because I don't want to find out. I instead will look at a recertified drive from serverpartdeals.

Any recommendations on a simple NAS setup? Rather than upgrading my router, which doesn't offer external storage, I'd rather go the NAS setup route.
If you are new to NAS, a 2 bay would suffice but I recommend going with a 4 bay QNAP, UGREEN, Asustor or Synology for future expansion.

Yeah, NAS rated drives like Ironwolf PRO are $$$. These Seagate does not want shucked, so there is a lot of hidden info on these internals - but they will work fine for NAS as they are in fact CMR (not SMR) and are helium filled. I shucked the 24 TB version from prior SD and the drive internals are ST240000DM001, which is listed as CMR on this Seagate data sheet (the 20 TB should be CMR as well, as all Barracuda drives 16 GB and above are CMR per this sheet). The reddit post confirms it as well. So if you plan to use them as storage and primarily and have the 3+2+1 backup you will be fine. I plan to use in an 8-bay ZFS TrueNas XL+ setup.

The seller for this price, quickdealstore's reviews seem kinda sketchy. The price is a little too good to be true.

will second the "cold storage only" sentiment - made the mistake of keeping them on and connected and the fw patrol reads/win indexing brought down each of 3 various size drives right after if not at warranty period.

Seagate doesn't have any SMR drives larger than 8 TB.

Is seagate is just labeling the derated Exos HAMR drives as barracudas now?

Can this be plugged into RPI 5 directly and used as a NAS ? Any pros and cons of using this way, than taking it out and using it with an adapter?

Amazon is not the seller on this item. Seagate warranty may be an issue if 'Quick Deals Store' is not an authorized seller. Also, the name 'Quick Deals Store' does not impart a feeling of comfort for me that these didn't fall off the back of a truck.
