I stumbled upon it by searching for the successor to Galaxy on Fire 2, and turns out it's the same company. If you like that game, this is a Roguelite version of it

I found Galaxy on Fire looking for a successor to the Escape Velocity games… did you like this one?

I did find Rogue Galaxy before, and it was like they took the ideas of a lone merchant/mercenary story, meeting contacts in bars, buying ship parts and upgrades, commodities, even a "expensive hunk of junk" spaceport that you can buy and slowly build up into your own, but somehow it still felt like a shallow imitation with a slap of new paint. I beat it, but I felt like there was no alternate paths and little reason to explore.

I loved EV on the Mac back in the day! This game is different than GOF2 in the sense you're not traveling from one planet to the other, trading commodities/ships, etc. It's a roguelite where you start out extremely weak, and it takes many attempts at runs to gain currency to upgrade your ship/stats. From what I'm told, Everspace 2 is much closer to what you described, but I haven't played it yet
