I've had previous Metro devices that can unlock bootloader and they ran fine on post paid T-Mobile data only plans even while locked (this is probably very YMMV), so to me, it's worthwhile, but I do get that it's not for some.
Also, for port in you can always just use some new number from another service (e.g. Google voice or numberbarn). At least that is what I usually do. (This does cost $3-5 so should be considered into the cost)

I bought the 2024 Moto Edge last year and it worked with T-Mobile while locked to Metro.
