I know this is a NAS, but what am I missing here? $800 and those are awful base specs. You can build a better PC and buy PCIe M.2 expansion cards online for $60 each.

Will this "better" PC have enough M.2 slots and enough PCIe lanes?
Will it also have a base TDP of 10W?
How about the 10Gb port?
This is very much a purpose built machine that will be hard to replicate as you describe.

Can you even find an N5105 board with more than one PCIe slot?
Bifurcating it to get 12 M.2 slots will end up with each drive being extremely slow.
It's not like this NAS is blazing fast, the N5105 only has 8 lanes, that 10GBe port is using up 2 of them, so I'm guessing a fully populated board is at best getting two drives sharing pcie3x1 slot, which would put it into the pcie2x1 speed per drive. So a single drive can't saturate the full 10GBe connection, but two or more could. Either way, no sense getting speedy SSDs for this.

I actually do think it's possible but not in this form factor. That is only reason I almost bought this recently but decided to go DIY
