Not to beat a dead horse, but 256 gig ssd is small if you're doing anything other than browsing and light email/word processing.

There's little more annoying than being told you can't update the OS with the patch your Mac just downloaded b/c you don't have enough space… and now you're stuck with even less space on the ssd than usual b/c the downloaded update is still sitting around.
You don't need more than 10gb for browsing and email/word processing.

I still use my 2012 Mac mini with a 256gb hard drive.

It's always on, never been turned off. Only restarted for updates.

Always 480+ tabs open in Firefox and 200+ in safari . Thunderbird with 13 email accounts and over 100,000 emails going back over a decade.

Folders with thousands of projects, mostly photoshop, and lots of excel, for 8 different businesses.

I still have 140gb of free space.

While I think it's absurd that they even offer 256gb at all, the statement about it only being good for light browsing and email is just as absurd.

Here's a novel idea... don't buy it.

Facts. 256GB was sufficient & standard maybe 15-20 years ago.

But if Apple provided a useful storage capacity on a $1000+ device, how will they coerce people into paying monthly for iCloud? Gotta protect those margins Lol

Error in the description: regular M3 (non-Pro) machines have Thunderbolt 3 ports, not Thunderbolt 4.

Edit: if you voted this as unhelpful, I'd be curious to know why.

apple stayed at 8GB ram for so long... i wonder how many years they are gonna keep the 256GB ssd bs
When manufacturers stop making 256GB and 512GB becomes the new bottom tier storage capacity?

May buy as a dedicated DJing laptop. Can use an external drive for music, doesn't need to be crazy fast transfer speeds for a 10 MB mp3

Until the OS is able to bloat a 256GB drive with AI models and telemetry data.

While I agree with your main point, you sure padded the hell out of your comment with stuff that has nothing to do with drive storage.

This is a older laptop not the new one people.

Older? M3, M4? All have great performance. I even have a M1 13.6 inch that performs fantastic.
