There's little more annoying than being told you can't update the OS with the patch your Mac just downloaded b/c you don't have enough space… and now you're stuck with even less space on the ssd than usual b/c the downloaded update is still sitting around.

I don't even agree that 256GB is too low. But it's a valid/reasonable critique. And paid cloud storage is not a good argument against that critique.
The dude called them a boomer for not embracing paid cloud storage as the end all be all of this discussion. That's just silly.
one of the 3 local stores has the 8GB/256GB M3 15" for $899 but that's not much of a deal.

I still don't understand how the base model configuration is anything to critique though. If you need more than 256gb, get a machine with more storage. That option is available regardless of your feelings on their pricing structure. And there are plenty of other good options besides on-board storage too: NAS, Cloud Storage, Thunderbolt external, etc., which for the vast majority of users getting a base model machine are perfectly capable of handling their needs.
They get hung up on the data points that they completely forget who the target audience is. The people buying a 16gb RAM/256gb storage laptop don't care as much about the specs like those who study spec sheets.
I don't buy base model machines, I get them configured with what I need. I need more storage, I got the model with more storage. I needed a RAM upgrade, I got the one with more RAM. Just because the option presented doesn't fit your needs doesn't make it a bad deal, it's just not for you.

I got my MacBook Pro m1 16 inch for 1k OTD from micro center like year ago. was refurbished, but was literally brand new. factory warranty I think just expired, but still got a 2nd year due to credit card. I was ecstatic.
the machine is absolutely great. 512gb and I tossed a 512gb micro ssd in the little slot for pics/videos/photos.
that said, I wish I had air, its a beast but its annoying lifting the 10lb block up and down off couch lol. im lame. if I saw that 15 inch id of snagged it and sold my M1 Pro
