No TB3 40/32.5 Gbps, FYI. Falls back to USB on TB3 systems.

This is where I run my 4TB NVME for my Mac mini and it has been flawless. No disconnects and no issues of any kind.

What 4TB NVME are you running?

What makes this so much vastly better than the cheap ones I usually see for $12?

Great enclosure.. I paid $96 a couple months back direct from OWC..runs a 2TB Samsung EVO Pro Plus NVME and I get between 3500-3700 throughputs write/read.. I'm fine with that.. transfers take no time, runs most larger apps like native (better than native actually) from this external. Doesn't really get hot at all. It's not meant to be the total portable external SSD, it's for desktop use and reliable fast external storage or content use. cheaper ones are fine and most likely will work, at lower speeds and most likely lower reliability. At the end of the the day the extra 40-50$ is just insurance.

Speed and heat dissipation.
Those $12 ones are so bottlenecked by the control chip the drive barely has to get out of idle so heat isn't really an issue for them. Like most things with computers it's all about finding the bottleneck. Assuming you have a fast enough drive inside the control chip is the bottleneck on this drive. The USB4 port can transfer data at 40Gb/s which is equal to 5,000 MB/s. The control chip on this enclosure maxes out at 3,151 MB/s. It has pretty good heat dissipation so you probably won't see any thermal throttling on longer reads/writes.

Oh man. Thanks for chiming in. That's disappointing. Guess we will be going with this one and it's cheaper.
