Has gone down to $19.99 in the past, but still isn't a terrible deal all things considered. The waterproof case and organization seems solid.

This is definitely a quantity of quality situation. If you just want a bunch of junk to throw into a tackle box for the sake of having a lot of junk in your tackle box, this is for you. Love to see angler related deals, but this isn't it.

Eh I don't need that many pieces. I think 398-pieces is really the sweet spot for me.

Why not cut out the middle steps and just toss the whole thing into a lake?

About four years ago, when I first got into fishing, I watched tons of tutorials and videos online and spent over $200 on various lures and gear, but didn't catch any fish. Later, I saw a Zebco rod and bait combo on sale on Amazon for just $18. I bought it with a "buy first, think later" mindset. Surprisingly, I ended up catching lots of fish with it at the lake—until one day, a fish snapped it while I was fishing off a pier by the ocean.

Lots of people saying this is junk but no reasons why? For the uninitiated, what separates one piece of sharp Chinese metal VS another? Wouldn't this be fine for the casual enthusiast?

Lol, this is so true. I also have friends that I started fishing with while they carried $$$$ worth of gear, and I had my Ugly Stik combo on sale with scrap hand-me-down lead weights, etc. I ended up catching fish all day. Lol. To each their own. Yes, I have nicer gear today, but I still kept the Ugly Stik as my trusty sidekick.

Honestly your skill and location matters a lot more than the gear. I think for the price this is a really good deal if you don't already have a box. This would be great for a new fisherman

Last year, I bought something like this for my nephew to prime his tackle collection. It was a 238 piece kit at half the price, and I thought it was alright, but only because he didn't have anything at all.

IDK about this set, but the box looks kind of big. In fact, I'd forget about the box as part of the kit if you're going to be into fishing a year or two from now. If there were a set without a box and it saved a few bucks, it might even be a better solution in the long term.
