That's typical when buying an off-the-rack suit as opposed to suit separates. Usually there's a 6" drop from jacket to pants (40R jacket => 34" waist pants).

Modern fit features an athletic fit through the shoulders, chest and waist with higher armholes; Modern fit pants sit at the waist; trim fit through the hips and thighs with slightly tapered leg openings
Height recommendation: Short (S) = 5'7" and under; Regular (R) = 5'8"-5'11"; Long (L) = 6' and over
This suit has a 6" drop which is the difference between the size of jacket & pants. For example: a 36R jacket includes a 30W pant

I've purchased the daily haute deal back when they were $60 a set, had them tailored. They look like expensive when you wear it properly. I can only imagine this is just as good after ding tailored & dressed properly
