Saving trolls time. Yes 256gb sucks. Easily solvable with external drive or internal drive replacement kit. Stop bothering everyone and ignore these threads. There is no better performing mini-sized desktop at this price that comes close to the Minis overall performance, noise, ports, and power use

Holy Moly, you pay an extra $220 for an extra 256GB of storage.

The base Mac mini at 16/256 is a spectacular deal at $470. Just get external storage. Anybody who needs more than 16GB of RAM knows they need more. If you don't know how much RAM you need, it's likely that 16GB is plenty.

I've replaced the NVMes in several laptops, but nothing Apple. All mine worked. I just cloned the drive onto the new drive and installed it.
I have replaced in Windows PC too. But Apple seems to be different. That is why I am asking about any personal experience.

Anyone successfully replaced internal ssd? I see videos online but are those always successful?

I haven't done it personally, but I've seen it done. The main issue is that the SSD is in these things aren't true SSDs. They're flash modules that interface directly with the CPU. So buying a standard one off the shelf isn't going to work. You have to buy it from one of the specialty mod stores that sells these things.

It's still cheaper than buying it from Apple , but who knows what the warranty and support is going to look like

Is there anything really cool I can do with this - beyond the obvious stuff most people are using it for?

Install Cleanshot X for great screenshots and video screenshots.

Wait, when did they change it to where you need their credit card to not pay taxes? Am I tripping, or was that Adorama that doesn't charge tax? $35 for KS for the 256GB. 😢

For the lower cost option with the paltry 16gb/256gb....

Not free shipping.

No 5% off with their card.
Anyone buying a base Mac mini shouldn't need more than 16GB of RAM.

As for the storage, pretty simple to just use an external drive.

This is a fantastic price for a very capable machine. You'd know that if you ever actually used one.

I did an upgrade to 2TB internal SSD. It also roughly doubled the SSD speed since besides charging an arm and a leg apple also seems to use slow chips. It took about 30 min, and the SSD I bought came with free tools to help you do it. Just follow a YouTube video and be a bit careful when doing it since apple didn't really design it with this in mind so there are some cables you should not tear when opening (again YouTube videos explain this). Software wise you need another apple silicone Mac, you just connect it via USB C to the mini with new SSD no cloning involved (not sure you can do it since the SSD is not really an SSD so it is hard to get two running in parallel). I got a 2TB version of this for about 650 and it is a stellar machine.

Gee, thanks for telling me exactly what sort of configuration I'll need. That's not rude at all.

Its called buying advice. Nobody in the market for this needs more than 16GB of RAM. If they need more than that, they should be looking into a different model Same thing as getting a minivan and wanting sports car speeds.

Show me a more capable PC at this price, I challenge you.

Not at all. Have you bought a base model M4 Mac Mini? What are your work requirements if so where you ran into problems? Can you show me a PC that is better than this at this price point?

When the base model had 8GB RAM, I agreed with the complaints for the most part. But at 16GB, this machine is more than capable especially at this price and for the majortiy of customers.

I'm still waiting for you to tell me where 16GB RAM held you back in this machine specifically.
