Unless you go with a local or a tour
If you can go with a local or hire a guide I would definitely recommend it, just stay respectful of the rules as you would in any country, don't take pictures of things that you think you shouldn't (like military sites or equipment for example) and keep an open mind for the local cuisine. If you go as only English speakers, without plans and just try to wing it, you will be sorely dissappointed.

I've been to China 6 times, the longest stay a month. Last time it was 8 years ago and I brought my family with me (wife, 2 girls aged about 2 and 6 at the time). Given that I'd been there before (for work) and been able to navigate pretty successfully, taking the family was a big step. The biggest PITA was, at the time, you couldn't buy rail tickets online so I had to pay a travel service to buy the tickets for me (HSR from Shanghai to Beijing and back). Hotels, local travel, metro, etc etc all just fine, but I've only really been in major metropolitan areas which undoubtedly helps.
Other than that you can get by, especially now with translation services. One thing that surprised me even getting around by myself is that many people are illiterate, so you can't necessarily count on being able to show a taxi driver a card for your hotel, for example. Regardless, being a total non-speaker, I've managed multiple trips and even arranging trips within country by myself. when I brought the fam I did rely on a company to do some things, like visiting the Great Wall, but that's just because the more people you have the more hassle things are in general.
All the above said, I deal with China for work (we have an office there) and I have an American colleague that is basically our China liaison. His wife is Chinese, he's been there many many times, etc etc. He went back for the first time since covid maybe a year ago and said that the country has totally changed. It's much more a surveillance state these days. He and his wife were considering retiring and "buying" property there (inasmuch as you can "buy" real estate in China) because her parents are elderly but are now reconsidering it given the trajectory of things politically. Personally given what covid taught us, I don't know that I'd ever want to go back - we've been shown that no one has any real rights there.
