40L is under nearly every rectangular volume allowed on NA and EU carriers. I've had one for about a year and a half now, and I *can* pack it so full it won't fit in the overhead, but unless I decide to overstuff it and add my shoes in the outside pockets, it is a perfect fit for nearly every jet built in the past 30 years and turboprops like the ATR72. In the latter is where I encountered the "too full" pack option, though I was packed for a 4+ week Christmas trip. In an Embraer 145 it fits perfectly in an overhead, if admittedly taking up an entire overhead. In a Airbus 32x Neo it fits like a glove with the long dimension = the depth of the overhead bin and the width = height of the bin, so multiple Farpoint/Fairviews can stack like sideways pancakes.

If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.

NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

Is any recommended backpack considered a personal item?
carry a 15.6 laptop + 13 inch surface pro, a mirrorless camera with two lens
Osprey Daylite 26+6 is my go-to travel personal item bag, compliant with Ryanair and other budget carriers. Doesn't have separate dividers/compartments for your camera and lenses however, if that's what you're looking for.

I have been using this for travel both international and domestic in the last 10 years. Great quality. It holds up very well.

Can 40L work with 5 day 4 night Patagonia trekking, without food/tent/bedding but with cameras? Or it needs 55L?
This is travel bag, it's heavy even when empty and simply built for a different function. You want a hiking backpacking bag. Go to your local REI or outdoor shop and they can get you fitted for a proper bag.

I've been addicted to this bag for years, but apparently I haven't been hit hard enough. What should I buy next? Gimme the good stuff.

Some info sharing... the latest Farpoint (since like 2022) has less organization available than the previous versions. They relocated the laptop sleeve to a better location (closer to your back), but then removed the entire front compartment where the laptop used to be (not a fan of that since it was useful for storing more than a laptop). They got rid of the old not very good water bottle / mesh pockets and replaced it with something more like a stuff pocket (a good change). They also moved the small stash pocket to a better location.

I personally like some of Peak Design offerings. Cotopaxi has some cool colors and designs if that's your cup of tea. The onebag and manybags subreddits usually have decent recommendations.

It's a nice backpack and very heavy duty. For the price it's great. However I purchased the peak design as well as aer backpack for $180 on fb marketplace almost brand new. If you crave affordability, storage, and care less for looks or organization then this is for you over other fancy backpack

never needed cos they don't break and torn. $120 for this is a major rip off even with so called lifetime warranty. I won't be carrying the same bag for life time.
The actual value of this Osprey bag is around $20 or $30 max . I have paid around same price for other brands and they have been wokring fine for the last 10 yrs.
I've been to 52 countries in my life and counting. I only use carry on bags. The difference between a $30 bag and this Farpoint 40 is is astronomical. Even the ergonomics and strap position and even material down to the strap itself is not even close. I started with those $30 bags, got a Farpoint (previous version) and no longer have those $30 bags, just gave them away. Would never consider even using them anymore.

On top of that, if you break a component on the Osprey like a buckle, just send them a message on their site's webform, they'll send you the part for free.

Biggest downside of this bag.

I spent virtually all of 2023 travelling, and I insisted on doing it with just this and the Osprey Daylight (15L). NGL, it worked quite well, but in hindsight, it would have been better to add a large check-in, especially for the longer stays.
The freedom to move about without a trailing bag wasn't worth it?

Absolutely. No better feeling than getting to the destination airport, shoes on the ground, and just walking straight out customs and into transportation with everything on your back. Mobility rules.

I guess you can say the same about someone buying an Audi over a Honda? People have preferences. Great backpack, has been highly reviewed on a lot of daily carry YouTube channels
But those are both good car manufacturers. If Osprey carry on backpack is Audi, the Smarkl, Grobrty, Aayutug $30 bag is a '99 Daewoo.

It was nice, especially during the actual travel. But when spend 90+ days away from home, a larger bag let's you take more shoes, more clothes, gadgets, etc. is very useful. And the way I would do those trips, I'd often setup a base with a LTS, so you're generally not lugging a bag around too often.

This is incorrect. This backpack rides unquestioned on domestic and international flights. I have taken it around the world many times and on some smaller aircraft and very stingy airlines. The bigger problem has been strict weight requirements (7kg on qatar) rather than size. Other than the frame the 40L can squeeze down quite tightly if there was ever an issue.
Totally agree, carry-on weight limit will be the limiting factor here.

Lifetime warranty?
I have claimed on the warranty for all of my Osprey bags (I have many, I love Osprey!). They've never given me an issue and have always sent current equivalent model although I understand they can also just make repairs too. I have yet to need any warranty repairs on my Farpoint series.

I took my kids around Eastern Europe for seven weeks last summer with each of us using Osprey Farpoint/Fairview backpacks. We're leaving for China on Monday for two months using the same packs. I love them!
