I saw somebody else mention that servers/drives generally get decommissioned around the same time of year. If true, the higher prices right now are possibly just because supply is low and price will go down again soon when there's an influx of "new" drives.

EDIT:
It appears the last deals on 12tb's started June/July of last year and then got even lower in Aug/Sept/Oct

Server parts deals is more reliable because they actually test each drive extensively before shipping (they show their process on YouTube), but they are also more expensive. Goharddrive I guess decided on a different business model, they don't bother testing their drives properly but instead offer a longer 5 year warranty with a painless return process.

Just format the drive to xfs, then 18tb is not too big. If you're talking about snapraid at least, it's not a problem mixing file systems.

I would like to drop four of these in my QNAPTS-453Be, but this drive is not listed in the compatibility list. Is there a good chance these drives will work?

They should work. QNAP hasn't done anything to force you towards using certified drives yet. I've got 3 of the 12TB drives in my QNAP NAS. I didn't check but I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't listed as compatible there either. They can only test so many drives and I don't necessarily expect them to keep testing newer and newer drives with older NAS hardware. My biggest complaint was having to rebuild my array 3 times.

I wouldn't want to go for a host managed SMR drive but otherwise I'd expect pretty much any drive to work.

I recently picked up the 14TB WD external, I had planned to shuck it and put it in my desktop. Wondering if I should return that and go with this instead.

They run 24/7 and never hear them in quiet scenes. I think most people mention the loudness of the clicking and seeking upon first power up, which can be loud.

I prefer Goharddrive for the longer warranty. ServerPartsDeal only has a 30 day return period and no warranty after. I bought 12 drives from them and did extensive testing right when I got them (2 weeks in from purchase date to finish). Then 4 drives proceeded to fail within the next 3 months with light usage (iso storage for a backup server, not an in-use server). I understand that drives fail, but still, having 1/3 of my investment wasted in a few months sucks. I'm just glad I didn't lose anything critical.

Yup, open source, dm-crypt the whole disk. It just looks like random bytes without the key. So, when it fails, it could be discarded or returned with impunity.

Damn, just setup my first NAS (ds224+) with 2 of the 10TB drives from last week. The 5 year warranty makes these drives very low risk but did not think of this scenario. I setup the drives without encryption too since the tutorial I was following made me think encryption was mainly for business need only. Gotta see if I can encrypt without having to format and start over now.
