Woot has the pro 2 wired Xbox controller for $24.99. I prefer this layout over the Xbox layout for retro games.

Which of all of these aftermarket controllers are the best and longest lasting? There are so many of them and I don't know what to choose.

8bitdo has a generally good reputation for controllers. At the end of the day, you just have to try them out and see if they're for you. I have a couple of their controllers and they feel solid. I don't feel like I'm settling by using them over Xbox controllers, which I used to use previously.
