It only has a free app. The pro app is for landscapers who have pro irrigation controllers.

I feel like this must be a joke but in case it's not; Orbit is about the most common residential irrigation controller brand in the U.S.

Here's the (almost) same unit at Home Depot

I've had one of these for a couple of years and I'm happy with it.

I wish there were hardware buttons and a small screen for quick scheduling updates and error codes without the app but it's fine.

As someone said, smart watering is based on local weather and an algorithmic calculation of your soil type to give you soil moisture, but you probably don't have anywhere near the precise weather and soil data to do that right, so you can choose to skip.

I'm putting in the rain sensor in a few days and will rely in that for skipping watering days.

My other peeve is that the system can sense when you wire two yard zones to the same controller zone.

There's two versions of the app. Free and $9.99. How restrictive is the free version of the app?

Not sure what $10/month unlocks, but the free version does everything I imagine you'd need. I've been using the free version for 2 years or so.

How is this compared to Rachio's system?
My complaint about Rachio is it wants to run my sprinklers for like 9 hours. Sure it cycles, but.. come on. I don't want to use like 4,000 gallons of water on a watering day. So I end up just manually setting them to certain times.. so about the only 'smart' I use with rachio is if it sees rain in the forecast it will skip, not just if the rain sensor actively detects rain...

Is it doing all zones for 9 hours, or is it like 5 minutes on, 10 off, 5 on, 10 off, 5 on, per zone times 10 zones? Mine runs forever too, but it isn't using excessive water, just excessive time.

My similar unit died recently. The power supply crapped out after about six years. Not horrible. What was bad, though, is that I could never get the wifi to work properly. The system seems to connect to the Orbit website, which relays signals down to the controller. It's not from phone to controller. Anyway, I used it manually with fine results. To replace it, though, I just bought a fully manual controller and prefer that.

Any chance this is compatible with Home Assistant?

Edit: looks like there's a HACS Orbit B-hyve integration.

One comment in Amazon says the app only lets you set 4 programs max so multiple zones have to be set on the same program if you really have 8 zones. Is that true?

Can the button be used to shut off the sprinklers manually? I don't mind controlling everything on the app but I was hoping there would be a way my wife can shut the sprinklers off manually if she had to.

Looks like this model is free after rebate through SoCal's WaterSmart program

How do I know if my water company is participating? I can't figure this out.

i did it by reconnecting in the same positions check labels and set up the wifi. Not much else needed. I had this Orbit (maybe a different wifi model) but it died after a 2 years. I went with Racchio and its been rock solid. No subsriptions and "no tips" lol

Much cheaper than the Rachio 12 zone I bought a few weeks back. Was debating between the Rachio and various B-Hyve models since my sprinkler guy recommended both. Went with Rachio because I felt, and read, the app was a bit nicer and easier to use.

Does this app allow watering to be scheduled at sunrise? My current Rain Bird controller is frustratingly limited—it only lets me set a fixed time.
