Several decades of research has shown that phthalates cause many health issues, including cancer. The latest study linked it to heart disease. It concluded that up to 13% of cases can be traced back to phthalates. Their statistical modeling is questionable but most experts agree that avoiding phthalates is wise.

Phthalates is commonly used as a fixative for fragrances because it makes the scents last longer. Virtually all air freshener have them. Many laundry detergent also have them. Since Gain's main claim to fame is its lasting scent, there's cause for concern. Well, good news for you Gain fans: I contacted them and they claim that there are no phthalates in Gain. This is backed up by Consumer Reports' own testing.
