It's good for cops shooting laser at people ahead of you. If they are shooting you, then it's already too late
For radar - they usually wait for you to turn around the corner and then zap you.
Police have both instant on and continuous running. Detectors are good for the continuous as well as instant on for people ahead of you. If you're by yourself on a road and get instant on, then your cooked.
Aren't most police using laser 100%. Isn't radar kind of dead?
not really. the majority still use KA band. Laser is rare for me to detect, but it depends on where you live.
This says rear facing as well - so the rear facing radar has to be very bad
Rear facing increases the range deection of cops behind you.
What is the GPS used for - can this reference a reporting site (like Wayz) and alert you to possible cop cars ahead of time?
It's used mainly to alert you to stop light cameras as well as to allow you to mute places that always false alerts.
- Do you guys also use Wayz for the reporting function and alerts along your route?
Yes. Waze and Radar detector makes you a lot less likely to get a ticket.
Just wanted to know today's radar detectors needs and performance.
Today, the main issue i see with a lot of cheaper detectors is that they false alarm/go off when you get around cars that have blind spot monitoring sensors.
1) I was driving home from school on the highway much faster than I should have and my radar detector sounded the laser alarm, I slammed the breaks hard hoping for the best and then I saw the cop a few moments later and he never came out. Reasoning was this was he likely tagged the car infront of me and then the bounce from the laser alerted me just in the nick of time to slow down.
2) I really wish I could find the dash cam footage of this one but there was a time where I was driving home at night on the highway and my radar detector warned me of a KA signal so I slowed down. Turns out the BMW driver behind me did not take kind to that so went around me in an aggressive manner and sped away. 5 seconds later the cop zooms past me and pulls him over lol.
With these examples, just know that a radar detector will not be 100% in terms of avoiding tickets but if you use it longterm chances are it will pay itself off by avoiding even one ticket which is what gives you the ROI to make these things worth it.
My newish car does not have one installed and cops love to pick on me (no ticket yet luckily).
