You get a lot more control with a manual pour over, therefore a better cup. I have this and you need stars to align just right to get a cup that's almost as good as a manual pour over. That said I've been able to get this one to give me a pretty decent cup.
Have you had the larger version? I'm wondering how it does compared.
Tbh I'm exaggerating when I said stars have to align to get a good cup. All I did was get a better grinder and adjust the grind size. It's really not bad at all. But IMHO manual is always better when compared to automatic machines.
I would bet you'd get a more evenly brewed cup if you get one of their larger brewers. If some of the grinds doesn't get extracted well in a larger machine, that might be 5% of he coffee. If the same happens to the amount of coffee for a single cup brew, that could be 15% left dry/unextracted. Does that make sense? Also a larger batch of coffee will have a larger basket and larger amount of hot water to exact flavor. This will hold a more consistent brewing temp.
Id like to leave you with a tip. I find that it's crucial that you make sure all of the grinds r soaked in the beginning. I use a spoon to help the water drip over all the coffee grinds. I think this is the weak point of technivorm brewers. You may want to consider Bonavita brewers as well. I had their (previous model) 10 cup brewer and thought it brewed a better cup than my Technivorm. Bonavitas seem to have an issue with their heating element failing though. Mine started randomly turning off during the brewing phase.
