buy $100.00 bucks worth of socks, underwear, t-shirts at Uniqlo and all room bathroom needs at 7/11 or Familymart upon arrival and save the extra luggage fees. make that good yen rate work in your favor! travel light, you can do it! size up though! a lot!

If you go, go in October. August is pure burning hell, and the summer continues throughout September these days.

3+ years in the making, decade of saving, more or less broke even rest is profit. Working a 9-5 has its benefits, socializing, less stress, but usually less money unless you get lucky or have a good degree. I was getting paid below minimum wage so had to do something or be stuck in a dead end job paying rent until im dead.

same fare out of SFO
I've done both. I much prefer the arrival time for the SJC to NRT more than SFO to NRT. The SFO flight gets in pretty late into NRT that you either end up staying near the airport that night or you trying to stay awake through jet lag and spend another 1-1.5hrs to make it into Tokyo.

wasn't bad when I was there but that was sixty years ago.. Following a lot of shutterbugs on X and they often mention how hot is is right now. Being an Air Force brat had it's perks.. lived there twice and miss it all the time.

I'm in Kyoto right now. It's hell on earth! The personal fan and umbrella combo is not enough. I'm getting those vest with two fans in the back as well. This is the hottest I've experienced in my life and I grew up in SE Asia. Good luck everyone!

Nce. Smilie I wouldn't have it any other way than working for myself. You may have to work longer, harder, stress far more, but at the end of the day only you determine your destiny, and that has its own reward. Plus, as you've mentioned most businesses make more money than a 9-5.

The climate has dramatically changed since. The full summer used to be from the end of July to the end of August. Now it's from the end of May to the end of September. We used to see the 90+ F temp maybe 5 times in summer. These days in many parts of Japan that's virtually every day of the longer summer.

No, it's still busy (and expensive) in August because that's when the Japanese people take their time off.

we lived off base so more immersed in the culture and nature... I think I'm better off here in the PNW.. similar climate, earthquakes and scenery. Also I get the feeling "tourists" are becoming a problem in some popular areas now.

Is it just 90F+ or 90F+SE humidity, aka 110F wet bulb? EEK!
