Looks like the same one I got off off AE months ago. Although I've packed with with me on camping trips, I haven't needed to use it yet.

Yes with caveats. If there is urine in there though then it is not recommended because it won't filter out urine byproducts, salt, uric acid, or viruses. So if you are staying in a 3rd world country hotel or something and got thirsty, you could pop this lifestraw right into a toilet 🚽 and drink the delicious water from it to keep yourself hydrated there every day. Just don't use the toilet that's all.

Interesting how this filter NEVER EXPIRES but our regular Brita filter expires every few months 🤔

Do Britta filters expire from age or usage? I've never thrown one out from being on my shelf too long, but I replace them periodically after use. The same applies to this. It is good for 1,000 gallons of water filtration

What is the practical use of this? This is just a particulate filter, which does nothing to micro organisms or toxins. This by itself doesn't make surface water safe to drink

It will not filter out viruses or toxic chemicals. It will, however, drastically reduce bacteria and protozoa. This drastically reduces your chance of getting the most common waterborne illnesses like giardiasis, salmonella, cholera, E. coli. They don't make water safe but they do make water much safer and thats good enough for most people out in the backcountry doing things like multiday hikes where you don't want to carry all your water. Hollow fiber membrane filters like this are generally the tool of choice for such applications. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJOiCztnXfY

Just remember, to use this you need to lean over and have your face inches above the water. It also takes a lot of suction to suck water through this straw. Unless you are trying to be ultralight, a better alternative is to use something like the Sawyer squeeze system where you fill up a little pouch and squeeze it to push water through the filter.

Or you can just scoop the water with a cup and then use the straw
