I have regularly eaten 15 year-old MREs, with never, ever even a hint of a problem. But I store them in the cool basement. Do not ever store them in an attic or garage - heat and time are the enemy. They are OK in high heat for a very short period of time, or low temperature for a very long period of time.
Speaking of low temperature, freezing is not a good thing. The crystals of the ice tend to make little daggers that pierce the container that causes spoilage in a couple of days after it thaws.
ETA: they also send you a picture of your MREs in the email they send with tracking info, which i've never seen anybody do before

I used a virtual card, so a non-issue, really.
250 metric tons of MREs anyone?

Don't die is not to be confused with feeling good
lol they were designed to be sustainable in all climates on all continents for personnel in the field, to be handled by possibly the dumbest people in our country and supplied at the lowest cost bidder - how the hell do you think it tastes?!?!
Also we nicknamed the veggie omelette
Vomlette
They taste funny to anyone who isn't a malnourished Ranger school student
As some of the components such as Poptarts have come in packaged that have manufactured expiration dates but are still fine years later.
They should be solidly good for another year or so. They just start to lose taste when you're going beyond 5 years from date of packing. The military when they do have the budget will always want to rotate these out.
For $40 bucks you buy this for fun if you've never had them before. I wouldn't buy these for actual survival packs. You want longer term stuff or stuff that's fresh and rotated out.And that's $40 shipped. So they're really trying to get rid of these. Shipping alone has to be $10-15 for them. It's a 20 pound package.
