Get the 256, 128 sucks. This tablet is amazing, I do all my photo and video editing on it now and the apps are vastly cheaper than macos. Whats better I hook this up to my thunderbolt docking port and I throw up my editing to my 4k monitor and any input, manipulation i do on the tablet w/ the pen. It is vastly easier to edit w/ the pen than a mouse (IMHO). I did break down and get the Apple pen pro but got it from Walmart "open box" for $79. Its legit.
Come Sept w/ new ipados it is going to be even closer to a laptop, so much I may sell my MBP.
I mean you can save $$$ over buying a laptop, unless you have very specific app needs this thing is 50% cheaper and you can hook it to a monitor/docking and you are on your way. Even has multi-screen and multi-threading now. When I travel now, I also have a 15" external monitor and away I go.

Looks interesting and I like the idea of a portable almost-desktop but only 8GB of RAM makes that a short-term use case and not necessarily good for years ahead.

FWIW the price at Apple Education Store is $70 more at $549, and I think that's a better deal for many because you get:
  • Any color you want
  • Free laser engraving
  • Free Pencil Pro (worth $100) or AirPods 4 (worth $90-100) or $120-129 off a more expensive accessory like the AirPods 4 ANC, AirPods Pro 2, or Magic Keyboard

Does your thunderbolt dock output to your monitor via DP, HDMI, or USB C?

Which dock btw?

Thanks

Apple's pricing model is to intentionally sell something under performing at the lowest markup so that you are forced to buy something slightly above average but not bare bottom so that they can make the most amount of money.
Apple cares about your privacy, but they don't care about your money

Hey I just looked around the back of the monitor, it is DIRECT USB-C to DP. When I plug it into my TB3 dock it says unsupported, so sorry about that. My MBP works tho.

Upon looking at specs it does support USB3 docks, but I don't have one of those so I cannot verify.

Too many cables.

256GB is overkill for basic media consumption. Heck the 64GB base iPad 9th gen did OK for over 90% of the audience. 128GB is just icing on the cake.

Unrelated to the deal, but I wish these would run MacOS apps. I was playing with one of these in a store, and really love the Surface Go(which has a similar form factor) for it's ability to be a full fledged desktop PC in a reasonably small tablet form factor. This thing has the power to absolutely drift circles around even the top config of the Go, but it's lack of software compatibility kills it for my use case.

For basic media consumption the base ipad is fine, ipad air/pro is more for enthusiasts or pro. As I mentioned I use this for pre and content, and those use a lot of storage even if I am keeping them in the cloud.

Also I had a 64gb ipad, and I couldn't even upgrade it because the new image and what was on there didn't make it possible, so not sure where you come up w/ your percentages but personal experience doesn't mirror that even in the case of the base user who just uses it for base level productivity.

Of course you are free to buy the lower storage amount, the struggle is you cannot upgrade it and I believe Apple keeps the super cheap storage low so that people suffer and then look to upgrade because the M3 is super fast. And on the ipad the memory is a bit constrained.

iPad 9th 64GB gen was the best choice for the $$$ for most and for a long time! Not in 2025 of course.

The new ipad great also, the m3 air is a winner in my book for creative. I don't have to spend 2x the cost for pro for more RAM and an OLED which most of my critical work goes on my Art 4k monitor. When they update ipados and make it more "desktop" like why do I even need the laptop anymore. I am sure Apple is worried about that but I still have 3 devices (PC, laptop, tablet), I could just go down to 2, maybe ditch the PC.
