Google Voice is simply a free service where you have your own phone number that you give to everyone. It can run from a phone, tablet and/or computer. You can call and text from that number using only data, and nobody has any idea that it's not your actual phone. The "base number" is your cell phone's actual number that you wouldn't need to use at all, so it wouldn't matter if it changed.

I've done this for years because my employer provides me a cell phone but I wanted to keep my personal number separate. So I ported it to GV and have the best of both worlds using the same phone. If I leave this company, my GV number is unaffected. It also works great when in a foreign country because you only need a WiFi connection to use your GV service as if you were at home.
I ported my main number over to Google Voice back in 2013. It's still my daily driver, but I also give out my base number that I've kept for about a decade. I'm considering leaving GV.

GV has a number of issues and limitations:

More delay (latency) than a cell or landline. This makes conversations more difficult and can cause the caller and caller to talk over each other.

No wideband voice quality comparable to VoLTE or 5G voice

Does not support MMS messaging

Doesn't have anything like RCS

Google hasn't added anything cool to GV in years

But... if something happens to my phone, I have a backup phone ready to go with GV number (but it's WiFi only due to SIM card super glued in when I tried to its broken SIM tray)

Edit: Forgot to mention that some banks and other companies don't allow the use of GV numbers for text notifications/alerts. This would be my main reason for dumping GV.

Mint service is very spotty outside major cities or off interstate. I went with Visible for $19/mth, no issues.

Or US Mobile. Both have plans with Verizon priority (QCI8) data that works with very little to no issues for me.

I've also used Google voice and it's pretty great except to be clear, there are a couple of issues: 1) Google Voice app is pretty terrible, it's never updated and still doesn't support RCS and MMS support is minimal.2) Really only good on Android (I don't use IOS so this isn't an issue for me). on Android, you can integrate it with the OS so everything works as part of the OS and all calls you make and receive come are through Google voice. with iOS, you have to use the Google voice app, the built in app still uses your regular number

I got this deal, much better service than the Verizon MVNOs (Visible, Spectrum, etc) which are so heavily throttled that their "unlimited plan" was very misleading.

Just signed up for the year ,

I tried Price Match from Best Buy but a big "NO" ,
it seems it now has to be price matched from Best Buys top 20 competitors ., which includes Walmart , Target etc but not Mint Mobile direct ,

still a great deal and I doubt I have ever gone over 35 GB anyway Smilie

mint $25 recovery fee + $1.40 tax so $206 while Visible is $19 month for first year currently. No upfront yearly cost and taxes fees included.

This is a fantastic deal. Mint is 100% owned by T-Mobile. I have used #MIN for over a year without any problems and the data transfer speed is fantastic.
