I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

Whats wrong with that. A machanic that build Toyota car does not mean he is less professional that building a US or Euro car
That analogy doesn't make any sense. There are many professional mechanics who work on Toyotas or any other brand of car. There are very very few (or maybe even literally zero) professional editors who edit on a machine with only 8GB of RAM these days.

We're talking about video editing in 2025 with 8gb of ram....not cars.

With LM Studio running a model, raid running in the background, librewolf having been open for days, discord running, etc. and I'm floating ~12gb of usage but really it's closer to 8gb of real usage if you ignore the compressed memory and I never touch the swap. This is on a M1 mac mini. If I got rid of raid and lm studio/pinokio I could easily live within 8gb.
Gives me hope for a Mac mini M4 😊

It's "possible" to edit with only 8gb in davinci resolve for example. Turn the timeline resolution to 720p, viewing resolution to 50%. And stick to 1080p. But having said that. I remember when these came out, and I saw somebody edit 4k proress footage with the 8gb model and it was snappy and fast surprisingly. It also depends on the software too

You don't understand how ram works. If there's more RAM it will use more of it. If there's only 8 GB available, there would still be probably 20% headroom left running those same apps you're talking about
I believe 'tis you who doesn't know how RAM works

Don't let this guys exaggerated post sway you. I just traded in my M1 8/256 for an M4 16/256 and for general use, you will barely notice a difference. I liked the form factor of the M1 so I kinda regret selling it.
Depends 100% on what you're doing. I have multiple IDEs open along with many browser tabs and 8GB disappears in a heartbeat. 8GB hasn't been enough for at least 5 years now.

I'm also seeing the space grey listed for $379.99. What's the difference between that and the one for $399.99?

$400 for a 5 yr old laptop? battery is bad. 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.
You can get a new better spec laptop for $200.

My kids got through college with this model just fine. They still use them. Of course 16 GB is better, but this laptop is still outstanding for its price.

Never thought I'd see this much controversy over a cheap laptop.

Amazon has the Intel version refurb (same spec, silver) excellent condition for $330:

and only $5 more for people that wants more memory with same CPU (16GB, Space Gray) for $335:

You should never get Intel, even if it's half the cost. Base model M1 is an incredibly responsive and great general purpose computer with wonderful battery life. Intel dual core is dog doo.
