I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

You are ignorant

Intel Macs are dead. They aren't getting support (software) going forward. It has little to do with AMD or Intel as companies, it's Apple's priority.

It also so happens apples intel bad products way under perform compared to their extremely cheap ARM offerings..

ok apple silly con got it no intel bad

Intel isn't "Bad"- Apple just no longer supports it. The Intel model that was out the day before the M1 was released no longer receives updates by Apple. The M1 is still fully supported and likely will be for years to come (as it is still being actively sold.)

8gb of ram is the real detriment on this. It's 2025 -- 32gb is considered the bare minimum standard anymore. Such a paltry 8gb amount was the low end back in....what, 2013?With casual admin use (email, discord, onenote, firefox), I'm hitting 65-70% on a 16gb M1 Air. You'll be slamming the swap memory -- or having to treat it like a mobile by single tasking. Just with that stuff alone, I'm occasionally hitting that swap memory like it owes me money. You're better off looking at the entry-level M4 Air which routinely hits $850. Yes, it's more than twice the price -- but you're getting a CPU that is significantly better AND twice the ram (just in the base config). For $1000, you can get that same config in a 15" chassis. All with the option to get a spanking fresh 3-year warranty.
All those thumbs down for a very rational comment? Odd. I've seen the base model M4 Air with 16GB Ram for as low as $750, which, when longevity is factored in, is cheaper than this 4+ year old model.

you don't have to update. I still run mojave on an older macbook pro. Or you can throw ubuntu arm on it
Ubuntu arm does not work on these m series. There is only 1 distro called asahi linux that works. I think its based on fedora

Now that's a deal! I would take an M1 MacBook over a Chromebook any day.
Are there no other options than Macbooks and Chromebooks?

I haven't had a Mac since the early 2010's. Is the Air model upgradable? I would want to add more ram.

Well that's the usual for Mac users. Any comment about longevity and they hit thumbs down. The M1 here is absolutely a steal, but RAM is RAM. Just because an OS uses it more efficiently doesn't mean more of it isn't worth it, and that's not considering the other improvements that have been added over the past 3 years.

They underperform because of the extreme design constraints. They were not designed to be used in ultra low power scenarios like the mobile but scaled up M-series chips were. They are kind of the opposite which are scaled down desktop chips which come with the baggage of x86 support and compatibility.

Nope. You should look at the newer models that come with more RAM baked in.

Jiminy Christmas all the bias here is insane. a brief Google search shows a history of news articles about problems with the 8 gb M1 absolutely thrashing SSDs for mem swap bringing about the early death of some of these devices. Love Apple or not you have to accept the reality that the same laptop with 16 gb of memory may not be significantly faster but will likely remain functional significantly longer than the eight gig version.

With LM Studio running a model, raid running in the background, librewolf having been open for days, discord running, etc. and I'm floating ~12gb of usage but really it's closer to 8gb of real usage if you ignore the compressed memory and I never touch the swap. This is on a M1 mac mini. If I got rid of raid and lm studio/pinokio I could easily live within 8gb.
It is super easy to max out 8 GB if you are running Chrome with 100+ tabs and also AAA gaming at the same time and/or rendering 4k videos. 8 GB is absolutely a limitation in this scenario.

That said, I seriously doubt anyone wanting to do these things is buying an M1 MacBook Air. This computer is a huge step up from Chromebooks and Intel PCs in the $300-$400 pricerange for general computing.

People in the market for Supras aren't shopping around for Corollas, to this point.

I'm also seeing the space grey listed for $379.99. What's the difference between that and the one for $399.99?
Careful - that one has only 128GB storage. IMHO is not worth the $20 savings, but again, your use case may justify it.
