I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

$400 for a 5 yr old laptop? battery is bad. 8GB ram, 256GB SSD. You can get a new better spec laptop for $200.

You are ignorant Intel Macs are dead. They aren't getting support (software) going forward. It has little to do with AMD or Intel as companies, it's Apple's priority. It also so happens apples intel bad products way under perform compared to their extremely cheap ARM offerings..
yea lol i prob shouldnt be complaining here bc somebody might get confused and buy an intel mac, apple is ending support very soon for intel macs so nobody should be buying an intel mac, but that doesnt make me any less mad that there is no more boot camp.

I just upgraded from Macbook Air M1 to M4 and noticed no visible difference in performance on day-to-day tasks, other than that it loads google maps a bit faster.
I actually prefer the form of the M1 to the M4, which feels more boxy to hold in the hand (even though on paper, it's lighter and thinner).
I will also note that bestbuy is still offering a $300 trade-in on the M1, so to buy this at $400 seems like a pretty good deal.

Never thought I'd see this much controversy over a cheap laptop.
You mean, people laughing at the high cost of what's effectively e-waste?

Then be prepared to endure hitting that swap memory like it's a Marine finding a vintage box of crayons after a long deployment.

Now that's a deal! I would take an M1 MacBook over a Chromebook any day.

Why? This is nearly outdated and has no update guarantee. You'll end up having to install Linux to keep it usable. A CB would actually be useful. The battery on this will probably be dead by next year. Terrible waste of $400.

No it is not.
its definitely better than 8gb on windows. It manages memory differently and compresses right off the bat, also caches right off the bat.
windows you gotta leave it on for a month straight before it even fills up the standby memory

I buy cheap Mac Mini Intel's for around $40. Put in 16G memory and 500G SSD. Does everything I need. Stream, edit audio, watch movies, forums, pay bills, etc. I also use Bootcamp for PC software. I have a high end PC for my video work with Reslove. Pretty cool to hang my 3 cheap Mac Mini's on the wall.
But, I would say this deal is pretty good for most people.

This would be what I get my child for college. M1 MBA is still really damn good for everything not coding or graphic demanding (SC2 on low settings ftw)

I would be ashamed of my parents if they got me this for college.

Here's a pro-tip for life: communicate.

You need to have a conversation with your goblin offspring once in a while. Find out what they like. What they need. What the school suggests they get. But to give them a nearly 5 year old garage sale used Mac with underperforming specs -- that would be insulting. And even worse if their college is Windows institution.

Invest in your child's future through their education. But if you're just first realizing this as you're shipping them off to college, I fear it might be too little, too late.
That's quite the paragraph for you knowing absolutely nothing about this person's situation. Also calling this underperforming shows your true colors-- which to be clear, means you're not educated on this topic at all.

It's 8gb of ram in 2025. Safe to say it's a piece of ewaste, even more so given it's a "refurb".

Direct from Apple refurb? Probably going to be fine. Refurb from anyone else? Garage sale item with a spit-shine....maybe more spit than shine.

And you're arguing against communicating with your offspring and their school to find out the right tool they need? Please be serious.
