Why are they adding hydrogenated soybean oil to peanut butter? Peanuts already contain plenty of oil. Maybe they're separating out the peanut oil to sell on its own for a higher price, and swapping in cheaper soybean oil to keep the consistency right?

Why are they adding hydrogenated soybean oil to peanut butter?
Hydrogenated soybean oil is added to peanut butter to prevent the oils naturally found in peanuts from separating and rising to the top of the jar. This process, known as partial hydrogenation, involves adding hydrogen atoms to the unsaturated fats in the peanut oil, converting some of them into saturated fats. Saturated fats are more solid at room temperature, which increases the viscosity of the oil and slows down separation. However, this process also creates trans fats, which have been linked to negative health effects.

Makes sense, thanks! I'll definitely take a miss on the peanut butter with trans fats added.

Not to thread crap, but just a heads up guys best peanut butter will just say "Peanuts" in the ingredients list, salt at the most.... but sugar, hydrogenated oils?? What for, king soopers in my area has Crazy Richard's 100% pb for 1.99 a jar on sale, when they do i stock up and get 5 for 10 which is a steal when peanut butter of the same kind, the natural ones that only have peanuts in them (like Adams) are usually 4 to 5 $ each...jiff, Peter pan, Skippy, even kroger brands all have this extra stuff in it...I suggest trying the 100% pb that only has peanuts as ingredients and taste the difference... you won't go back to that other junk

I checked ingredients, saw hydrogenated vegetable oils and decided not to buy.

I don't think it's partially hydrogenated, I believe it's fully hydrogenated, so there shouldn't be any trans fats, but now the oils are fully hydrogenated, which will probably be determined to cause some new disease in the next decade.
