These Peltier based coolers will work just fine in an Air Conditioned space plugged in 24/7. I have a pair at my desk at work. The coolers produce ice from the condensation in the air on the very coldest spots opposite the Peltier.

It also depends on the Fridge/cooler, some are built slightly better with larger heatsinks on the "hot" side. You can upgrade the cooling fan with a spare PC fan to ensure it has adequate airflow and get better results than stock.

I would advise to not use the switch to turn them off and simply unplug/ leave it on cold. After a few years the switches can become a bit brittle and break. I just hardwired it to always on and its been good for the last 7 years or so. They are dead simple and the only moving part is the fan which is generally 80mm to 120mm (cheap standard PC sizes).
