Good deal, but this adapter gets terrible speeds, even when compared to a standard gigabit ethernet port. Tested same computer, same server, multiple runs on speedtest.net, and i get average 350 mbps on this vs. 500 mpbs on gigabit ethernet port. At other times i've used this adapter, I get only half the speeds. I have a cable matters gigabit adapter that gets much faster speeds than this 2.5 gbps adapter

Maybe I misunderstand the question... but that is what this is. Instead of being capped at gig speeds, though, it can handle up to 2.5. Good for folks with multi-gig networks (2.5 gig switches, etc.) and don't have the ability to put a 2.5 gig NIC (network interface card) in their machine.

My apologies, I meant USB A to Ethernet. If that was better than this one.

USB-A is a type of port not a speed.
So you could have a "new style" USB-C running at 480Mbs USB 2.0
and a "Old style" USB-A port running at 20Gbps USB 3.2.
You can really tell the USB version and speed from the color of the connector

it matters a lot what kind of port you plug it into.are you using a usb-A to USB-C adapter? even within USB-C there is different speeds.

I love the form factor of USB-C, but unfortunately not all C ports are made equal. USB-A was generally uniform for a very long time, but C is not and like my work laptop the performance on each C port is different. Even though they are right next to each other. One is basically usb 3.1 and the other is thunderbolt but that's for the docking station or the charger to the plug into.
