Cheaper, yes. Of course. But "A LOT lighter"?

Per Apple:

MBA M4 15" - 3.3 lbs

MBP M4 14" - 3.4 lbs

There's a bit of rounding there so the difference is really more along the lines of 1.5oz (40g). The significant difference would be between the 14" MBP and the 13" MBA (2.7 lbs).

the vms maybe. seems like macos tries to utilizer the efficiency cores to save battery. performance cores only get used quickly and for seconds at a time..
light dev work no. m4 is more than adequate

Mainly the base (non-Pro) M1, M2, M3 chips. The M1, M2 only support one external display. The M3 (non-Pro) supports two external displays with the lid closed. The M4 base supports two external displays with the lid opened and closed.
