This is a good deal for a current gen processor...and yet paying $390 over current base deal for an additional 8 gb ram and 256gb storage somehow doesn't feel good (edit: and 2 gpu cores)

Agreed - it looks almost like they are using the base deal to get your attention and then sucker you in for 50% more - this is almost bait and switch for the performance-oriented user😀

Good deal.

Also worth mentioning for Costco members, same spec is $10 more at Costco but comes with a 2 year warranty instead of 1.

I own an M2 Ultra Studio, an M2 Pro mini, an M4 mini, an M3 iMac (the only 8GB box of the bunch), and a M3 Pro MBP14".

There's little reason for > 16GB for the vast majority.

I would only suggest > 16GB if you have a very specific need for it (and most don't). It's (this is) an odd combination: more RAM on a box that isn't made for sustained load. If that's what you want, most of the time you'll be better of with the $1200 MBP14" 16/500 setup, even with the lesser RAM amount.

The average person is far better off spending less and upgrading sooner. Apple is iterating technology and increased speeds far faster than they (err, Intel) did in the past, and so spending less and upgrading after, say, 3-5 years is now a much more interesting proposition. Plus, relative to inflation and historical prices, the Mac pricing has really, really come down, particularly in the low end. The M4 mini, if you don't need a laptop, at $450 is a stunning powerhouse (for home use anyway) of a machine for most people.

I would argue this is not targeted at the performance oriented user.

The MB Air is not, but the MBP is a step up because of the active cooling and 10 GPU cores

Agree, but this is an MBA thread. I'm just confused who would actually buy this. A "performance" MBA user who would refuse the MBP for close to the same price?

I agree, but I also see the scaled increase in costs, which can cause people to buy "more computer" than they may need. The base model is $799, 512 GB is $999, the 24GB model is $1189, and the MBP with 512GB and 10 GPU cores is $1299, and up from there.

I agree. I need a bit more storage. Hopefully, the new apple base model standard will be 16 ram 512 ssd.

The idea of 'future proofing' is a powerful psychological idea to get people to buy higher margin products.

Agree. And when buying something where technology is largely static and replacement costs are expensive (picture a house…) it can be a good idea to plan ahead. For technology, the vast majority of the time, it's foolish, because one ends up spending a massive premium (say, 50% more money for 10% more speed type scenarios) for what would be given to you "free" in a year or two with normal year over year processor / technology upgrades.
Don't futureproof in tech. Instead, buy lower end, and upgrade more often.
