A traditional setup will be better. Soundbars are useful for rooms you don't want to have a speaker setup in. Home theater? Speakers. Living room that you use for multiple things, including watching TV? Sound bar.

I bought this soundbar the last time it dropped to $700 and recommend it at this price. My toddler loves going after wires and outlets to test us and these are mostly wireless but great sounding surround speakers.

if you have a Samsung phone open the Samsung wallet and open a checking account with the Sofi money. I think just requires transferring a few dollars to it, but once you get it done it will allow you Samsung Savings Program similar to epp

how does this compare to putting $700 into a traditional receiver and a 5.1/7.1 setup?
Really doubt that you will get a decent 5.1 or 7.1 for this price. A good receiver itself will be $350. And good surround speaker set is likely in the 500-1000+ range. Factor in running wires, wife acceptance factor, pain of setting up a working system, pain of moving the system if you have to and this makes a very compelling argument. If you have the money and are willing to do the work though, a dedicated system will always sound better.

Don't compare soundbars to avr setups, and you'll enjoy soundbars for what they are, plug n play nearly wire free mimick of surround and Atmos. It'll never equate in any way. I love my Q990Cs, but at some point my theater room will get the AVR treatment.
Unfortunately people will always make that silly comparison.
It's two completely different systems for two completely different users.

In general terms, if you're top priority is sound quality, go traditional.
If it's convenience/aesthetics, go soundbar.

Would this be overkill for a 10' x 12' bedroom?

If anyone needs any speaker stands, these work perfect.

Its hard to replicate the balanced and immersive sound that these soundbars generate vs discrete speakers. Especially at this price point (I know, I tried discrete speakers before getting a higher end soundbar like this)
Here is the summary of soundbar vs speakers for everyone.

1) many people don't have subwoofers prior to getting a soundbar setup like this. Once people hear the subwoofer and how it explodes the room, they automatically think the system is great. Negative, all subwoofers can make a room explode
2) a soundbar will have nulls in the low midrange, meaning if you don't pay attention, you might not notice it. However, orchestra music, and even songs like Superstition will not sound full because anything over 80z is lost since your soundbar speakers (not your sub) cannot go as low. Traditional speakers sound more full because there are no frequency nulls.
3) soundbars are perfect if you don't care about perfection, they are even perfect for computer speakers. I personally think having two bookshelf speakers as computer speakers looks stupid c I'd rather have a single minimalistic soundbar that also has the potential to have a center channel if setup properly.
4) this system went for $400 a month or two ago with Open Box conditions

and other models will let you add speakers as you find them on sale. My Samsung HW-S800B 3.1.2ch deal was fun to upgrade with BB open box rears. I'm getting blasted in my tiny home

same here. I think my bedroom is 12 x 15. I only have a 43" TV but probably going to upgrade to a 50". is this too big?

On a $700 budget, the dedicated 5.1 surround sound system you'd buy would likely be at best as good as this system, assuming you're buying new gear. If you're open to buying used, you'd be surprised what's available on FB Marketplace. But you're also gambling going that route. As an owner of this soundbar, if $700 is your budget, my advice is buy it. Doubtful it's going to sell for less, aside for a pricing mistake, which is how I ended up with mine for less.

It was a price fluke. A few people managed to pick it up in store after purchasing, people who got it shipped were not so lucky, and I hear are still fighting about getting promised money back. Many others had cancelations. Don't base your price expectation on random mistakes like that.
