my kid's been asking for a icemachine for a while. the msrp on this suggests that this is a really good one but the reviews (i looked on costco and amzon) are worrisome. is it just a case of unrealistic expectation and/or user error? (many folks mention a filter problem while some say it just stopped working within a year)

costco also sells a cheaper frigidaire which i could easily return for a refund if it conks out…so i'm waffling a bit

Any idea if RO/Reverse Osmosis water can be used the same way Distilled can? I have an RO setup and that would make it easy. Debating if $170 is worth the hassle. I've always wanted one of these and the price seems reasonable. Anyone know how the Frigidaire Costco one works in comparison? I know Opal is the OG in this game.

Snagged one. Seemed like a pretty good deal. It came in a couple days ago, set it up and cleaned it last night. Let it make ice overnight (using distilled water), woke up to a counter full of water. Guess we'll be fighting out how the warranty works. I moved it to an area where leaking would be less of a problem to see if any of that mess was water I somehow got somewhere it shouldn't be during cleaning (unlikely, but I'm in denial) and we'll see if it does it again.

Machine works great aside from the leak last night, it's louder than I'd like, but tolerable.
