I'm sorry. How much?in the grand scheme of things, this DOES qualify as a slick deal because that's a substantial amount of discount.but bruh. 17 grand for a guitar seems egregious. I totally understand and respect the effort, the craftsmanship, the attention to detail, the pickups, heck, I'll even admit the legacy and heritage. but like, after 6 grand, those things gotta have diminishing returns. admittedly, I sound like (because I am) one of those people who will never afford this category of instrument and so I apologize for the bitterness and envy in my tone. but one could do a lot, with 17Gs

You're right though. Above 6 grand or so you are paying for collectors' value. If it isn't valuable, or if that doesn't matter to you then it makes no sense to pay this much for a guitar.

Maybe this is worth it to someone for the collectors' value. They've done a masterful job of replicating it and making it look old. But, for 17 grand, you could buy an actual 60's-era vintage Les Paul. I'm not a collector but I feel like the real thing would be more special to me. For a replica of anything, that's been made in the last few years, I can't fathom spending any more than some few thousand dollars (granted, not something I'd do anyway though 😅).

Even though im guilty of having some silly high end hype guitars myself, I'd argue that the number is actually closer to 2k.

I don't know about that. You have to research it extensively and be an expert on what you are investing in. Yeah, if you're a shlub wango playing an LTD .. OK, I agree with your statement. But if you are a professional musician that has albums out .. then your knowledge can make you a lot of money.

Here's my 1984 Gibson Flying V Custom Designer Series at auction a few days ago. Yes, it sold for $36,000. Right there is the auction final.

And here it is sitting next to me in the studio.

I paid $2100 for it 6 years ago on Reverb.

So, if you know of a stock that increased in value 18 times it's original purchase price in 6 years then .. you need to join a brokerage.

These artist guitars are typically NOT good investments. They rarely appreciate. In my opinion, seemingly the best investments in Gibson guitars are the ones that no one wants and are on clearance. This list includes the 1959-60 Les Paul, the Flying v, Explorer. More recently the Modernes, the Buckethead Les Paul, the Buckethead SG, the Goddess (and Vixen). All of those were on clearance and exploded once Gibson quit making them. Compare and contrast with these $20k Artist models. Gibson started releasing them around 15 years ago--most are no more valuable today than they were new.
