Just got back from China in June. Yes, it's visa free for 10 days if you have a US passport. But you have to enter or leave via a 3rd country. Roundtrip from US doesn't count. You also need to show them your itinerary

You'll likely need a visa, unless you visit a second country before flying home.

When I went, we first flew to Shanghai, then Hong Kong, before flying home. Yes, Hong Kong counted as a different country at that time in 2017.

If you're a Disney fan, make it a trifecta by going to Shanghai, Hong Kong, then Tokyo in 1 trip.

Not anymore. I am pretty certain China opened up VISA-free stay for 2 weeks to most developed countries, USA included.

anything flying in/out of lax is NOT WORTH IT! (traffic, time, hassle, etc cost)

i'd much rather spend $200 more at any other airport if i had a choice

It would be a big improvement if the visa wasn't needed. It was a convoluted process to get one in 2023, and I honestly wouldn't feel comfortable just starting the work now for a flight in September.

That's what I meant of course; it needs to be transit. I'll remove the word visa from my original post. I was responding to the person that implied US was visa free like the other 40+ countries recently allowed. It is not.
