Why are you even here? People dropping $35 for 2 cameras aren't likely trying to buy whatever nonsense 'non-china' bs you'd recommend for 10x the price.

I am heavily invested in Tapo cameras and hubs/sensors, plus a few bulbs and plugs and a doorbell cam. I bailed on Wyze to move to Tapo and I'm very pleased with the price/performance compared to Wyze.

I was really peeved when Wyze switched to their paid subscription model. But I fully expect TP-Link/Tapo to eventually move in that direction as well. It seems to be the common strategy in this sector. Flood the market with dirt cheap devices, then after there's a well established customer base, slowly roll out the "paid subscription required" nonsense just as Wyze and others have done. I'm just hoping Tapo doesn't start firing out firmware updates that remove previously accessible features as Wyze did.

I recently sold all of my Google/Nest stuff, as I was very heavily invested in their ecosystem, but wanted to get away from subscriptions. I replaced everything with TP-Link/Tapo cameras, doorbell and the lock and I have to say that I'm pretty satisfied. I popped in a microsd card into each, and everything is smooth and fast to access.

Major drawback I have experienced with Tapo/TP-Link without paying a subscription is lack of rich notifications. My Wyze (cam lite or whatever the grandfathered tier is called) and Eufy (doorbell, no subscription) provide a snapshot with the motion/person alert. But Tapo merely gives me text.eta: woldemariam beat me to it, so I 2nd their opinion
I have eufy cameras and a door lock, so, as you said, I receive notifications. When I click on a notification, I'm able to watch a short clip of whatever triggered the recording. I'm wondering how the Tapo cameras work. You do get notified as well..But, do you have to go back and watch the entire day's recordings to find where the trigger happened, or is there a way to watch just the clip?

I assume this Tapo camera supports ONVIF and could send its video stream to an NVR (such as Reolink NVR). Then the NVR could do the software-based motion detection. Can anyone confirm?

If we don't use the subscription how does this work when you're away from home? Please explain how we get notified and if we can watch the camera feed or a triggered clip on our phones.

You dont have to go all way back, you go to you camera, playback and download, and it will show a list of all events with a screenshots with the most recent on top, you tap the last one and just watch the clip

With no subcription, the camera records to a SD card. Your camera is connected to wifi so you can watch the clips wherever you are with the app on your phone. You get notifications when motion/sound is detected, you just don't get a screenshot from the notifications, but there are screenshot when you look at the events.

How bad is the app as compared to Yi Camera without the subscription? Yi is what I have been using for a while and it's practically unusable without the subscription now. So many ads…

Aah ! Got it. That's not bad, similar to Eufy, just that in Eufy you have the option to get a thumbnail in the notification and be able to click and watch it straight from the notification. Thanks for clarifying!

Tapo app is similar in that clicking the notification brings up exactly that event. In my test just now, Tapo was very quick; Wyze not as quick; Eufy took a few more seconds to 'decrypt' its on-board file. This was all local/WiFi.

Side note: I love how my Eufy notification zooms into the detected face, whether it's the delivery person or a hubcap!

I guess it will be confused if you get a hubcap delivery?😆

According to Amazon's Rufus AI it supports ONVIF. So my assumption is you are correct.
