Love these for BBQ, but they don't have the ring to keep them closed. Unless you plan to leave them hanging open all the time when not in use, I wouldn't buy them. It kind of ruins the deal.

Sure, that would work. Admittedly, one aggravating thing about the locking ring is it can slide down while you're using the tongs and pinch you. That said, I prefer having the lock myself. It's just easier. If you look at the Winco 16" tongs with locking ring, they're $6 more for that tiny piece of metal. That's a ripoff.

I don't have that sliding problem. My problem is I keep my tongs in a utensil canister with the head pointed up but it's always crowded so I have to gently place it in so the ring won't push against the other utensils and unlock. I know I should just put it head down but I don't like how that looks heh.

Yes $6 more for a lock is dumb.

I personally prefer the kind that have a locking mechanism built into the hinge. It's like a little tab you pull out while holding them closed, and they stay closed until you push the tab back in. Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/HIC-Harold...E3BGE?th=1

Yes, that's the only kind I buy now. I still have the old school kind in my kitchen junk drawer though, I might have to garage sale them next year since I tend to reach for the modern ones now. I also love silicone tipped tongs for use with non-stick pans, they work great.

Hahaha, was going to say the same thing. Such a pain to store in a drawer without it.

put them in an empty toilet paper tube, same for long cords for storage.

It does but it's best to verify before each use.
