Added two of these to my PLEX server setup as external drives and they've been great
Wow for Plex you just need a hard drive

He's not wrong though. External...SSDs...on a Plex server? Like to store your "personal media files"?

It's huge overkill, and I would need so many 4TB drives.

4TB @ $200 -- YEP! It's finally buy time.
$50 per TB and not a penny more! When "gen 5" drives are hitting that magic number then STOP up-voting lesser gen 4 drives costing way more! It's $50 per TB and not a penny more!

Unfortunately, like AliExpress, B&H is not recognizing the tax free month of August, for Florida

Wake me up when the 4tb 990 pro or 9100 pro hits this price. Yeah, I know, gonna be awhile. And to people supposedly using this for plex - that has to be a troll. I know there is a lot of ignorance in this world, but come on.

Good drive even without DRAM cache. Faster than the 990 EVO but not quite a PRO.

Who or what workload would actually notice a performance difference between this and a PRO drive?

DRAM cache as a feature is highly controller and workload specific, it is not a given for your data profile that DRAM cache will be better or worse. There are many newer drives that can sustain long writes w/ out DRAM cache and newer gen 5 many do not have at all. Where DRAM really shines is on super small files or I/O (i.e. 4k) and sometimes it can help extend sequential write performance but I think this drive (4TB) has like 400 GB pSLC so looking at long writes even when it goes down we are talking 1500 sustained which is not horrible and doesn't drop off a cliff iike some of the stuff I have. So would I run a transactional database on it, no. But linux ISO and my media files, yes.
Not throwing shade, but the DRAM cache magic elixir is not a given and this may be "good enough" for most users -- and if the pricing is good then its a potential win. There will always be spec hounds that will want the "best" of course.

Small heavily transactional I/O think 4k or less like on a database or an app that works in very small data chunks. For games, media, most apps, O/S will not notice. On the far end maybe transfers of hundred of gigs of data in a run and even there not dramatic.

OK found this: https://hothardware.com/reviews/s...ssd-review
Look at 4k tests, this is where DRAM and pro in general would shine. However most consumers don't run those types of workloads, so YMMV.

Seriously, I've got a 24TB drive, and I need a second one. So, at 4TB a pop, I'd need two future-proofed motherboards to do SSD for all of it.

Conventional storage works plenty good enough for apps like Plex.
