I was just given this by my company as my new work machine and it is seriously such an effective beast.

How's the return process if I don't like it? Typically stick with Costco for this reason.

I just hate how plasticy these are compared to the t14s and x1 carbon. Kills it for me.

This is a premium laptop - use premium materials. (unless theyve fixed it for this gen)

P14s gen 5 seems more sturdy. I have it for work laptop and it felt like an upgrade from gen 4. Not sure about gen 6 but i assume it should also be the same material

Have you used a magnesium thinkpad? Its like night and day. Ive tried in the past to use a T14 or P14s and they just feel like cheap junk. I wouldnt risk picking them up with one hand - eventually its gonna bend the chassis. Even if its reinforced underneath and wouldnt break - it sure feels like it.

I dont care if they wanna keep the T14 plastic - but at last make the P series magnesium.

Im still using my X1C9, but if the newer carbons dont get much better my next laptop will be a mac. Right now comparing my work M1 macbook air vs X1 carbon 9th gen - the mac is older but destroys it in performance. Not even close.

My ideal laptop would be a magnesium thinkpad - 14 inches. same bulk as T14 or P14s for cooling purposes with newest AMD chip hopefully not throttled down to make it suck. If I cant get that when I upgrade, then mac it will be.

128gb ram or bust on these. There is no point to the AI chip laptops if you dont have the memory to run 80B LLMs locally.
You're thinking Ai max390/395. This isn't it. 128GB won't do you much good.

Why are so many flagship laptops shipping without discrete graphics cards these days? As AI grows, vRam is king.

Because there are opposing consumer objectives at work:
  1. Size, Portability, Weight
  2. Battery Life
  3. Performance for video processing, engineering, games
  4. Performance for Business Productivity
  5. Performance for light use
  6. Cost
They are making laptops that meet a subset of those criteria. You cannot achieve them all at once on x86. Integrated graphics are reaching the point where they can meet demands for moderate video and light gaming interests. (Apple seems has an advantage here but limitations on available software. I am not an Apple fan…simply stating the facts.)

Is their GPU better than the 780M?
