I thought they usually don't retire nintendo sets? at least not very quickly
(I just realized they finally retired the nes tho)
They will eventually retire all sets. They come out with new sets all the time, there simply isn't enough shelf space to keep producing everything. Usually a typical set will get 1-2 years shelf life, sometimes much more time, sometimes even less time.
This particular set will probably get the normal amount of shelf life, possibly more since it's being well received. But if you're looking for a slickdeal on it, I'd wait to purchase until BF or the holidays. I'd imagine this will see a decent discount somewhere at some point. Normal is around 20% but sometimes sets get 30+% off.
But don't worry, you won't miss this if you don't preorder, unlike some other products out there. Lego is real good about producing more if there's a lot of demand.

Only until Lego produces more. They didn't actually sell out of sets, they just require them after a few years.
