IMHO it's not a good idea to buy PCIe Gen 5... it's more like waste of money.

The best time to buy was two years ago. Prices have only gone up since then.

Probably true for most people. I got one of these for $179.99 with Discover coupon during Prime days but ended up sending it back mostly because it barely maxes 12K reads on 15th gen Intel hardware. Nothing wrong with the drive it's just a current hardware limitation of the chipset. Yes, I jut barely noticed a small amount of speed increase but I'm also very sensitive to that. A lot of people wouldn't notice a difference between a sata SSD and NVMe drive.

Best time to buy is 1) when you need it regardless of costs. Do your due diligence but if you need it, buy it and don't look back or 2) when the tech and semi industry pull back and they get too fat with excess inventory. #2 is not simple to predict always and you can be waiting for months or years. AI was a buzzword with little understand its requirement. The amount of data we all store is going up like a hockey stick curve just because we all can with mobile devices alone.
I hope that helps understand a little better. If you need it, shop the best devices that fits your needs today and meets the performance as well. Unless we have some serious global event, expect things to be tight and little to no price dumping. Also expect to pay for the tariffs cost impacts. I managed global movement of product into billions of devices and WE pay the tariffs, period.

Yup. Bleeding edge memory and trailing edge chipsets is alway a challenge to manage. Only thing is if you know you can use the device in a newer system later that can take advantage of Gen 5 and that spec is solid and does not rev (which I have no idea and have not invested to know where the spec and committees stand on it). Being able to reuse the device could have advantage for longevity, but 80% of the time I think I'm good and buy with a future in mind, it does not really work out. Like USB-C has been a cluster. Having to label every cable with capabilities blows.

Ain't that the truth. I don't notice any discernible difference between Samsung 980 Pro and 990 Pro, and I'm very happy with my Gen 3 P-31 (?) SKH drive. For that matter my Gen 4 SN850x is just another drive too...

I'm buying another 2TB drive for a new laptop (wanted to put 4TB in there, but alas the bios won't support it. Damn you Dell!!!).

I won't buy chinese, so I've thought about the 990 Evo Plus, but it's only $20 cheaper than the 990 Pro. Would I notice the difference? Probably not, but for $20 (no tax) it's probably worth it to go Pro... Or so I tell myself.... I think..Embarrassment
