To save you the clicks: Add $53 to the price if you don't have a bridge.

I actually love hubs, it means the connections will never fail. I invested heavy on 'no Hub' LIFX bulbs and now 80% of them don't work anymore because they self burned their wireless transmitters. The old Phillips Hue with hubs are 12+ year strong.

This is only an extension unit that you can plug into an existing set - you still need a base one to plug it into.
And yes, like most of the Hue lineup, you need a zigbee hub, preferably the Hue one if you want to use their app, etc, although you can control them with any one, like the SmartThings hub, for example.
You can get Hue hubs for a song on eBay, since during Black Friday/Prime Day/etc, there are often sales where the starter kits with the hub are cheaper than the bulbs by themselves. I think I have four of them in a box somewhere, in addition to the one I use and the one I passed on to my folks.

It's an extension unit that you can plug into the core set of two in order to get more. It's not meant to be used on its own.

2010s called and they want their 'hubs' back. Seriously. Investment in hub required. Every other brand has products that work independently. Firm no on anything Philips.

All Hue lights run on the Zigbee smart home protocol (although the basic bulbs have limited functionality once BT as well), which means you need a Zigbee hub. It doesn't NEED to be a Hue hub, but the Hue hub works with their app, which offers some additional Hue-specific options.
There are cheaper smart lights that run over wifi, but then you have your wifi network congested with 30+ lights each with their own IP address, slowing everything down, including their own response time. They really aren't worth it in the long run. There is a reason most decent smart home devices don't use wifi, but an independent mesh network like Zigbee, Matter, Thread, Z-Wave, etc. Wifi is fine for security cameras, where you need the bandwidth, but for small, fast commands, it sucks.

It also means not having all those lights on your wifi network, which is just an all-around better implementation.

100% agree.

Been in hue ecosystem for a very long time, zero concerns. They just work. 8+ year old hue bulbs, still working.

I started with LIFX because they were cheaper but switched over to hue shortly thereafter. All of LIFX products have crapped out for one reason or another.

It's a light bar that is often used as "surround" light along with other main color lights. Example: people will light up a side wall of a living room using this. If you have a hue sync product you can create some cool special effects, if you put this light facing the rear wall. Think of these similar to surround speakers, but with light/colors. Hope this made sense πŸ˜ƒ

This one does not come with a power supply so either you will add to an existing setup or get a separate one. I've seen some aftermarket ones that are much cheaper than the hue brand.

I don't mind a zigbee or matter hub. At least I don't need one per brand. One hub to rule them all. Also, the concerns about WiFi congestion is overblown. Any decent router can easily handle 50+ devices. If you can get one that's triband, there are zero worries of any kind. I have 50 devices on my WiFi and have no issues.
