Mobile Beacon wedged their way into the Sprint/Clearwire merger and got a settlement to sell this to low income people and community organizations. You either have to be below the poverty line, or a library/school/etc.

Unfortunately it is abused regularly, and the "honor system" has kinda taken over.

Eventually the settlement with T-Mobile will end (they won't say when) and Mobile Beacon is probably hoping to become an MVNO like Tracfone was after that.

T-Mobile is required by the feds to offer a certain number of low-income units to meet 2.5 GHz spectrum licenses. They're already ramping up self-ship efforts to replace Mobile Beacon in anticipation of the agreement ending.

If you want another alternative for home internet backup, you can get the Tmo Home Internet Backup plan for <$20/mo ($10/mo for Tmo wireless customers).

You get 120gb of data to use over the month, which should cover you for a few days if your primary internet is down. It comes with a free Tmo modem that you likely need to return if you cancel.

My wife is 100% remote, so I don't mind dropping $120/yr to ensure she has internet and doesn't have to switch to hotspot. If your home router supports primary/backup WAN, it can be a seamless experience to the user (I used to use a Merlin flashed Asus router (from Tmo Big Grin) that had a primary/backup, but switched over to a Unifi device that switches over automagically).

Yes, I realize this deal is for unlimited 5G internet access, but, depending on your use case (and the uncertainty of how long it will work), the $175 buy-in would shy me away.

Tell me what they say as months without an actual date is pretty crazy

I got the refund for the router this morning. I'm going to give the kuWFi C160 a try with the sim card.

So they're selling a sim + device to people but then not shipping the device you need to use the sim for months. All the while charging you for the sim service? Weird
Yeah.. it certainly is. When it said preorder I assumed we were talking like wait a week or two. Not that they didn't have devices at all and it's going to be months.

Wonder if you can just use an old phone. I was thinking about the GL.iNet GL-X3000 but it doesn't have a battery. For some reason they don't sell the other one on amazon that has a battery and it's not on sale on their website.

I'd doubt it would take months shipping. Give it a week or two, shipping from NJ, probably snail mail.

Let us know what you find out. I spent a hour looking for a compatible 5G box but found mixed reviews for the MiFi 2000 and X Pro. I don't need a working box immediately but if there isn't an ETA in 2-3 weeks I'm going to start looking.

I ordered 1 because the $10 T-Mobile plan only gives 30gb as hotspot. Will this work in my T-Mobile hotspot as unlimited?

If you are willing to pay the GL.iNet GL-X3000 (Spitz AX) supports basically every band in the US but the UWs like n277 and such but supports all mids and lows. Super customizable as well.

They've already charged my card for the router too. Kinda insane that they would have no shop date and be charging cards before guaranteeing the item will arrive. Seems scammy at worst. Disorganized at best.

Thanks for the recommendation. Think I'll cancel my shield and grab this instead. Cost more but this is more robust + has a bridge mode.

They have the battery version on their site for slightly more but they might not charge tax either so might balance itself. It's an xe3000 instead of just x3000

Is there a decent 5G modem under $100? It doesn't need a battery—just a LAN port to connect to my UniFi Gateway.

I got 3 SIM cards today from T-Mobile. I only ordered 1 and was only charged for 1. None of the 3 SIM cards seem to work though in my hotspot. They all seem un-activated.

No idea whats going on.

Same, 3 separate UPS packages each with a T-Mobile sim. No email, no info on the website account page about them or activation lol
