Anecdotally, I tried two of these from Amazon and they refused to hold an IP address; so I couldn't connect to them. They also came with some ancient looking power adapters, so I'm not sure if there was a defective batch or maybe some really old, broken firmware

I use one of these everyday. So far been reliable for me and I've had no complaints about it I guess besides the occasional fails to paste when you paste text. I also like this will do 2k unlike others that only do 1080p and can also play audio through if you need that but I personally don't use that.

Do you need one or two of these per host? Do you need to have a dedicated IP address to access the host remotely over the internet? Does 4k work with Tailscale enabled?

I use it on my laptop so 1 but I have jetkvms as well. Currently I feel these are better than the jets if you need better resolution or audio over hdmi. I use wireguard built into my router and I don't have a dedicated but my IP also never really changes honestly. Well hasn't in like 2-3 years now at least. I haven't tried tailscale so I don't know the answer to the last but I assume it would.. Don't see any reason it wouldn't tbh unless you just don't have the upload.

Any cheaper IP KVM?
Don't need 4k for something that's rarely used and for emergencies.

I have a really dumb question. Can you remotely install updates that require the host computer to be restarted using such remote KVM switch. Wouldn't it will get stuck on the windows startup page (where you need to enter a pin or a password)? What about video cameras for remote meetings - can this use a native camera without the meeting host recognizing that you are not where you need to be?

Here is what I am trying to accomplish. I work from home anyway. I want to work from anywhere in the world, without my employer knowing that I am not in the city I said I'd be in. Will this accomplish that purpose?

DIY Pikvm using pi zero 2w. I spent a total of $50. Built it prior to so many lower cost IP KVMs in the market. I would probably go with the jetkvm if I didn't already have one.

Sadly jetkvm is no longer available in the US.

Pikvm looks interesting

Definitely worth looking at, I have a pi 4 as well but it works so well on the pi zero 2w that I would just stick with that. Absolutely zero latency issues.

Mine displays bios and everything. They GL.NET also has some add-on that can hold the power button lol.. I got offered to try one since I was a fairly early adopter of the comet but I was going on vacation and they wanted feedback a week after receiving it. The jet's have ATX control but you have to have the addon board for that as well. If you are able to actually boot though without any need for power control than jets and comet's show the bios. My pikvm sometimes would bork but they finally resolved that a while back.

Mine came. Upgraded to FW1.4.1.
Question: It has 1 USBA-to-USBC and 1 USBC-to-USBC included.
The USBC to USBA goes into the power adapter. Required to power the unit.
The USBC to USBC is thus all that's available for use. It's made to go into the keyboard/mouse port on the unit, and from there connect to a USBC computer.
I want to attach it to a computer with only USBA, no USBC. What's my next step? I can find a generic USBA-USBC cable, I suppose, but I'd thought this required special cabling, so I wasn't expecting that to work....
The USBA port on the device is made for attaching the button pusher gizmo, so that's not available for anything else.
EDIT: Their support got back to me in 12 hours, during CN evening time. Any USB cabling can be used to connect to your PC's / Mac's USB ports : this does not require "special" USB cables of any sort.

And for those asking if it can see BIOS and load an OS and whatnot - the answer is yes. It's getting HDMI input straight from your PC's motherboard/GPU, and it's getting mouse/keyboard inputs (err, once my previous cabling issue is resolved) going from it straight to your PC's motherboard/USB ports.
It's as close to being there as you're going to get - and even better if you add a button pusher (to push power button) or ATX PSU controller (so that, after five minutes of fiddling with motherboard cabling, it can power the unit on or off at will).

I bought one of these on monday and I played with it for a couple of days and just got another while the code is still working. I really like it and have yet to find any issues with it. You can get to bios, you can mount iso (s) the image is clear and responsive. Well worth the money.

It's impressive.
I have a remote 1080p screen KVM'd across my LAN. Yes, Windows Remote Desktop (and Win 11 Pro ... only) can do this too, but only within the OS. This KVM device will handle the k/v/m during reboots, BSODs, BIOS setup, ISO / USB boots (and includes 5.5GB of usable space for a Windows 11 ISO - 300MB to spare with a 24H2 Win11 ISO!), and more. It's very useful.
Speed on a gigabit local network isn't perfect. When I move around on the remote screen, I see H264 compression artifacts all over the place. So if you expect perfect screen usage, this isn't that. Windows Remote Desktop is for that. This is for BIOS, USB sticks, and all the other remote stuff you can't do inside the OS, inside of Windows Remote Desktop already.
And at that, it handles things very well. I've a button and I've the ATX controller on the way. Impressive!
