Anecdotally, I tried two of these from Amazon and they refused to hold an IP address; so I couldn't connect to them. They also came with some ancient looking power adapters, so I'm not sure if there was a defective batch or maybe some really old, broken firmware

I use one of these everyday. So far been reliable for me and I've had no complaints about it I guess besides the occasional fails to paste when you paste text. I also like this will do 2k unlike others that only do 1080p and can also play audio through if you need that but I personally don't use that.

Do you need one or two of these per host? Do you need to have a dedicated IP address to access the host remotely over the internet? Does 4k work with Tailscale enabled?

I use it on my laptop so 1 but I have jetkvms as well. Currently I feel these are better than the jets if you need better resolution or audio over hdmi. I use wireguard built into my router and I don't have a dedicated but my IP also never really changes honestly. Well hasn't in like 2-3 years now at least. I haven't tried tailscale so I don't know the answer to the last but I assume it would.. Don't see any reason it wouldn't tbh unless you just don't have the upload.

Any cheaper IP KVM?
Don't need 4k for something that's rarely used and for emergencies.
