I don't think too many people would disagree w/ the Anbernic RG35XX H (currently ~$41 here) being a solid choice. It's pricier than this, but not too expensive overall.
It has a bit more power than the R36S. It's also a better built device that adds Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, (for wireless controllers, not Bluetooth audio), and a mini HDMI port. The R35XX H has a 3.5" display, but if your eyes would do better w/ something a little larger, I would highly recommend just waiting it out and getting the RG40XX H (link [aliexpress.us]) when it hits around $41-$43 again. It's effectively the same as the RG35XX but with a bigger 4" display. It's still relatively compact, just not quite as pocketable as the RG35XX H.
Or, if you just want something inexpensive to play NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, PS1, GBA, etc. the R36H is basically the same exact handheld as the R36S on sale in this thread, just w/ a horizontal form factor. It's $27.43 w/ code AEUS06 here [aliexpress.us]. Note that the R36H has the left analog stick placed above the D-Pad (it's below the D-Pad on the Anbernic RG35XX H) and the buttons / build quality aren't as good as the RG35XX H, but still good for its ~$28 price.
