Like VegaTheChosen suggested, throwing a new OS is as simple as flashing an image to a new SD card, then swapping cards. You could even install a new OS (on the SD card) before the handheld ever arrived and change OS's within seconds (as fast as you can install an SD card) the moment you take the new unit out of the box...before ever powering it on. The SD card is functionally your device's 'hard drive.' The only real consideration is you just need to make sure the OS is compatible with the target device.

P.S. Even with the Miyoo, many people ditch the stock OS within seconds of unboxing them.

This is misleading as you can put a whole new OS on these fairly easy. And most people trash the SD card and replace it with a new one, which you could load a new OS on.

I don't think too many people would disagree w/ the Anbernic RG35XX H (currently ~$41 here) being a solid choice. It's pricier than this, but not too expensive overall.


It has a bit more power than the R36S. It's also a better built device that adds Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, (for wireless controllers, not Bluetooth audio), and a mini HDMI port. The R35XX H has a 3.5" display, but if your eyes would do better w/ something a little larger, I would highly recommend just waiting it out and getting the RG40XX H (link [aliexpress.us]) when it hits around $41-$43 again. It's effectively the same as the RG35XX but with a bigger 4" display. It's still relatively compact, just not quite as pocketable as the RG35XX H.


Or, if you just want something inexpensive to play NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, PS1, GBA, etc. the R36H is basically the same exact handheld as the R36S on sale in this thread, just w/ a horizontal form factor. It's $27.43 w/ code AEUS06 here [aliexpress.us]. Note that the R36H has the left analog stick placed above the D-Pad (it's below the D-Pad on the Anbernic RG35XX H) and the buttons / build quality aren't as good as the RG35XX H, but still good for its ~$28 price.

Wow! What an amazing response! RevOne I really appreciate this! Ok I'm going to wait for the RG40XX H. I appreciate the in detail response because I'm new to this and want something I can connect to my TV from time to time to play with my son, but we can also take on the go to play some Mario, Metal Slug, (I wish GameCube) but those are so expensive as of now. We enjoy games on our GC like Viewtiful Joe, Mario Sunshine, Crazy Taxi, oh and one of my favorites Simpsons Hit and Run
