This is very misleading, while just focusing on the cpu, the gpu of the m1 max is way better.
More powerful Apple M1 Max GPU (32-core) integrated graphics: 10.6 vs 4.4 TFLOPS of m4

It's easy to get a little lost in their product line/chips. The Max chip variants are MUCH more powerful for pro workloads and come with other QOL.
If you use:

Multiple high refresh monitors
A lot of peripherals that need full lane speeds (TB4 or TB5 for newer models) like an external SSD
Hardwire ethernet with a 1gbe+ connection
Need the extra RAM with less 'Apple Tax' of a newer model
Want to game (yes really)
Then this deal, along with the M2 Max studio for $899 that was posted a few weeks ago... are great deals. If you don't actually have a pro workflow , this is a waste - get a modern M4 chip device.

Your first sentence is correct. The rest is not. With that dynamically allocated RAM, the OS takes and gives RAM as needed. If RAM is being used as VRAM, the OS takes that from the total RAM. If you need less VRAM and more "normal" RAM, the amount of VRAM will decrease. There's no locking away of about 12 GB of RAM. I've had user processes use all the RAM (and SSD cache) before on my Macs. I did a test process to see how much RAM I could use on a system with 32 GB and I was able to use about 28 GB before there was significant SSD caching and memory pressure.

Great LLM purchase. Snagged the M2 Max version a few weeks ago. For those saying get an m4, different use cases. M1 Max bandwidth is roughly 400 GB/s this also has more GPU cores and better cooling.

Currently running OpenAI/gpt-oss-20b, google/gemma-3-27b 4bit mlx, Deepseek-r1-0528-qwen3-8b 8bit MLX just to name a few without any tweaks or optimization at very decent tok/sec.

don't forget the 10gig stock in mac studios! One less thunderbolt dongle to deal with (and those cost like 200ish for a 10g thunderbolt dongle!) and if it is like the laptops, only M3s and later got the wifi6E for 6ghz channel

Thank you. M4 Mac mini is at $450 with 1 year warranty so I was wondering if this justifies almost double cost!

I'm not arguing with you at all – I agree they're different machines for different purposes. Someone with more "pro" needs might really appreciate these features of the M1 Max, but "most" people won't. I'd only really recommend this for someone who knows they'll take advantage of the GPU, bandwidth, or ports on the Studio. For everyday use the single-thread performance of the M4, which is tremendously faster than the M1, is probably more meaningful.

The M4 is way, way faster at single-threaded tasks than the M1 Max. The M1 Max is better for "pro" use cases that where parallel processing, bandwidth, GPU, or port flexibility are important. I wouldn't consider them the same at all, but if you don't actually know whether you'd prefer the Max, you're probably much better off with the M4 Mini.
